Saturday October 3, 2026 - Iridescent Bug: Asian Songs from Hong Kong & Beyond
Time: 2:00PM - 4:00PM

Details:
Join Iridescent Bug — Phoebe Man, Daniel Koulack, and Leonard “Lewsh” Shaw — for a lively, interactive afternoon of music, rhythm, and cultural exchange.
The trio will share an eclectic mix of Asian music rooted largely in Cantonese-language songs, including music familiar from Hong Kong TV dramas.
With Phoebe on drums and vocals, Daniel on banjo and upright bass, and Leonard on keys and saxophone, the afternoon moves between live performance and hands-on audience participation.
Audience members will have opportunities to try taiko (traditional Japanese drumming), learn basic rhythmic patterns, explore call-and-response, and experience the music from the inside.
Whether the songs are familiar to you or completely new, this is a chance to enjoy great live music, connect through rhythm, and experience different musical traditions together in a relaxed and playful setting.
No musical experience is needed — just come ready to listen, play, and have fun.
Saturday October 17, 2026 - Mamowintowin: A Gathering in Sound, Movement & Graphic Notation

What happens when a group gathers and creates a piece of music together in real time?
Andrew Balfour will lead an interactive workshop exploring sound, movement, graphic notation, and collective composition.
Mamowintowin, is a Plains Cree word meaning “gathering” or “a gathering”, sits at the heart of this participatory experience.
Through guided exploration, participants will contribute sounds, movements, ideas, and elements of their own cultural and personal experience as the group builds a shared musical work. Andrew will introduce graphic notation. This visual way of representing sound beyond traditional written music will be shaped with the help of participants live-creating a score using drawing, colour, symbols, and visual notation.
No musical training is required. Participants are invited to listen, move, make sound, create, and see what can emerge when many individual voices gather into something shared.
Saturday Ocotber 24, 2026 - Ukrainian Botanical Cross-Stitch with Dionne Jennings
Time: 1:00PM - 4:00PM
Venue: Zaytoon, 99 Osborne St #203, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2R4
Details:
Dionne Jennings will lead participants through a hands-on botanical cross-stitch workshop. This is a chance to learn about Ukrainian folk art and the basics of cross-stitch while creating a small botanical bookmark inspired by Ukrainian decorative traditions. Along the way, Dionne will share context around the use of plant imagery and traditional design, creating space for both making and cultural learning.
Supplies include:
Printed instructions
Embroidery floss
Aida cloth
Needle threaders
Tapestry needles
Thread spools
All materials will be provided, and participants will be able to take their project home to continue or complete afterward.
No previous cross-stitch experience is required.
TBD November 2026 - Show & Tell: The Stories We Carry
Time: 6:30PM - 8:30PM

This gathering encourages neighbours to bring something culturally meaningful and share the story behind it.
It might be a photograph, piece of clothing, work of art, musical tradition, family custom, language, food-related tradition, or something that travelled with you or has been passed down through generations.
Participants will share what they brought and tell us why it matters. You don’t need to be a professional storyteller or performer, this is simply an opportunity to listen to one another, share , and learn about the histories and traditions carried by people in our own community.

Friday November 27, 2026: Winnipeg Awit Vocal Ensemble

Details:
The Winnipeg Awit Vocal Ensemble is a Winnipeg-based ensemble celebrating the themusical traditions of the Philippines. The ensemble is particularly focused on strengthening community connection.
This evening, they will lead you through vocal performance, dance, and interactive moments, will share music rooted in Philippine culture while inviting audiences to learn, connect, and experience the traditions behind the songs.
The word “awit” is Tagalog for “song.”
Open to all. No musical experience needed

Note that Zaytoon and the Crescent Arts Centre (Upper Hall) are NOT wheelchair accessible.
